Free math mystery pictures, a fresh worksheet every time

Countlings is a free generator of math mystery pictures (also called color by code or hidden picture worksheets) for elementary school. Unlike a fixed PDF, it builds a new worksheet every time, so every student can get different problems with the same picture. The idea is simple: the child solves a problem, the answer gives the row, the letter gives the column, they shade that square in the grid — and once every problem is done, a picture appears. Practice suddenly has a point that a plain column of sums never has.

Every worksheet is free to generate and print, with no sign-up and no limits. Ready for grades 1 to 5, in black and white or in color.

How it works

  1. Pick a grade, a grid size and a picture — or leave the picture random.
  2. Choose how many sheets you need. Each one can carry different problems and a different picture, so there is nothing to copy from a neighbour.
  3. Hit Print. You get a US Letter (or A4) page with the problems on top and the grid below, plus an optional answer key for quick marking.

What each grade practises

Every grade mixes all the operations the children already know, not just the one taught last week. Difficulty grows through the route to the answer, not through bigger numbers. Each grade has its own page with sample problems and tips on which grid to choose.

Why it beats a column of sums

The picture works as instant feedback. Get a problem wrong and the shaded square lands outside the shape, so the child spots it themselves instead of waiting for a grown-up to mark it. They can also see how much is left, which holds attention far longer than an anonymous list of problems.

No problem repeats on a sheet. For every answer the generator builds candidates grouped by problem type, so a child never gets the same sum ten times over with the numbers swapped around.

For teachers and parents

The sheets work for math centers, early finishers, homework, test review, sub plans and long car rides alike. They are no prep: pick, print, hand out. You can generate up to 60 sheets at once, each with different problems — one print run covers a whole class.

Every sheet carries a sheet code at the bottom, such as 3S-kocka-4417. The same code always rebuilds the identical worksheet, so you can reprint exactly what the children had last time.

Which pictures can be revealed

There are 123 pictures across three grid sizes. The bigger the grid, the more problems the child solves — and the more detailed the picture. Color versions add a color number to every problem.

Frequently asked questions

Are the worksheets really free?

Yes, completely. No sign-up, no account, no limit on how many sheets you print.

What age are these worksheets for?

Grades 1 to 5, roughly ages 6 to 11.

How do I save a worksheet as a PDF?

Click Print and in the print dialog choose Save as PDF instead of a printer. Leave the scale at 100 % so the grid comes out at the right size.

Can I reprint the same worksheet later?

Yes. Type the code from the bottom of the sheet into the Sheet code field and you get the identical worksheet back.

Does every child get different problems?

Yes, as long as Different problems on each sheet stays ticked. It is the easiest way to stop copying.

Is this the same as color by code?

Very close. Each answer tells the child which square of the grid to shade, and color worksheets add a color number to every problem, so it works like color by code on a grid. Because the picture only appears with correct answers, the sheets are self-checking.

Are the worksheets aligned to Common Core?

They practice the fluency standards for each grade: addition and subtraction within 10 (1.OA.C.6) and within 20 (2.OA.B.2), two-digit subtraction (2.NBT.B.5), multiplication and division facts (3.OA.C.7) and order of operations with parentheses (5.OA.A.1). Each grade page lists what it covers.

Do children need crayons?

Only for color worksheets, where each problem carries a color number. Black and white sheets need nothing but a pencil.
