Grade 1 worksheets practice addition and subtraction within 10. Each answer is a row on a 10×10 grid and the letter next to the problem is the column. Solve everything correctly and a picture appears — a heart, a star, a ladybug or a creeper.

Which grid and picture to choose
First graders work within 10, and because the answer sets the row, they use the 10×10 grid. For a first worksheet pick a black-and-white picture with fewer squares, such as the heart or the key.
There are 61 pictures to choose from (29 black-and-white, 32 in color). Depending on the picture, one worksheet has 22–100 problems.

Can a first grader do it alone?
Usually yes, once they can read numbers to 10 and the letters A to J. On the first sheet, show them how to find a square: the answer is the row, the letter is the column.
Do the problems cross ten?
No. All numbers and answers stay within 10.
Why does grade 1 only get the 10×10 grid?
The answer is the row number. First graders count to 10, so a bigger grid would need answers they have not learned yet.
